Google has selected Larry Brilliant, former CEO of wireless firm Cometra Networks and renowned physician, to head up its Google.org philanthropic arm. Dr. Brilliant will become Executive Director of the organization, which has been promised 1% of Google’s annual profit and 1% of its stock, currently valued at $1 billion.Brilliant has spent much of his career in the public health sector, battling smallpox and blindness in the 1970s and 80s. Cometra, a joint venture between Intel, IBM and AT&T, closed in 2003. It is expected that Brilliant will focus on health issues, which he says are critical to conquering poverty.
